November/ December newsletter
From the Rector
Greetings everyone!
As I was looking at all the activities of St. David’s during September and October, I felt so blessed to be a part of the life and ministry of this parish. We had three baptisms and have a wonderful group of youth preparing for confirmation. Almost every member of the parish contributed in some way to make our annual craft fair a huge success. We had fun and fellowship together at the Shore Dinner. On St. Francis day, all kinds of critters came to church and were blessed. We continue to have a vibrant outreach ministry. The Boys and Girls Club was very grateful for the school supplies we collected for needy kids in Salem. At least $400 was raised to support the homeless through Lazarus House and its ministries. The presents for children whose parents are in prison are piled high around the Christmas tree. The Dave Hall Fund is providing everything from cribs to sports equipment to tuition, so these kids in foster care who have suffered so much can be safe and have ways of developing their full potential. And finally, the members of St. David’s have continued to faithfully support each other in times of need.
With all these wonderful blessings of our life and ministry together, I was not surprised that the stewardship committee chose as a theme for our pledge campaign this year: “Tending God’s Garden.” We have a bountiful garden. God has called each of us to be co-gardeners with God and to joyfully acknowledge and share the fruits of the harvest. So to help us fulfill our call, each week during the campaign we have been focusing on a different aspect of tending the spiritual gardens of our souls, our parish, and the great garden of the earth and all that dwells therein. We’ve talked about looking closely at our soil – who we are and our social location. We reflected on the purpose of our garden and selecting the right seeds we desire to nurture at this time. In the next few weeks we will discuss the spiritual essentials of watering, pruning, and weeding. Then, on November 19th, we will be celebrating the fruit God has blessed us with as we gather in our financial pledges for 2009. In the next few weeks, please take the time to really pray about what God would have you give to enable God’s garden here at St. David’s to continue, grow, and share its gifts with all in need.
God’s Peace and Blessings!
Carolyn
OUTREACH
School Supplies for kids in Salem
Thanks to all the members of the parish who brought in school supplies to children who could not afford them. The supplies were given to the Salem Boys and Girls Club for distribution. The Club was grateful for our help. Supplies were also given out to at least three mothers who came to the church asking for assistance in obtaining what their children needed for school.
Hike for Hope
The final amount is still being tabulated, but members of St. David’s donated at almost $500 to support the ministries of Lazarus House which provides Lawrence and Salem area residents with emergency shelter, transitional housing, dental services, food, and clothing.
CHIPS (children of incarcerated parents)
Presents are piled high around the Christmas tree in the sanctuary to be given to children whose parents are in prison. This is a 31 year old program run by the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire. For some of these children, who are already coping with an absent parent, this will be the only gift they receive. Once again, you have all responded so generously!
The Dave Hall Memorial Outreach Fund
Word is out about the fund and requests are pouring in from the two primary case workers assisting foster children in the greater Salem area. In September, the Outreach Committee received a request for two cribs for foster children in Haverhill. A daughter of one of our members donated two virtually new cribs and the Dave Hall Fund was used to purchase two mattress and sheets. The committee also received and approved two requests - one to enable a young woman who spent almost all of her life in foster care to attend school to obtain her certification to be a licensed nursing assistant. She and DSS had come up with several other funding sources, but needed the remaining $600 for tuition. The committee also approved purchasing athletic equipment for a 15 year old so that he might be able to participate in school sports. Other requests which have just come in for review are: $100 for a year long museum pass to provide a place and activity for supervised parental visits; possibly adopting a family or purchasing Christmas gifts for a child in foster care; two twin beds; a bicycle, and a guitar and lessons. Early in November members also provided some “hands on work” assisting a foster family with their fall yard clean up.
Nets for Life
In our budget for 2008 which was approved at last year’s annual meeting in January, St. David’s made a budgetary commitment to support projects addressing the needs laid out in the Millennium Goals. These goals address all kinds of issues with the hope of alleviating the suffering of extreme poverty in the world. Last year the parish provided funding for an irrigation system for an isolated village in Mexico and assembled “school kits” for children living in impoverished areas or in refugee camps. This year the congregation decided to take up a collection for St. Joseph’s School for Indian Children which provides housing, education, and medical care for poor children living in 3 reservations in N. Dakota. We also approved collecting money for mosquito nets which help children in Africa from malaria and other mosquito borne diseases. Donations for these nets will be our outreach focus during December. Each net costs $12 and will be distributed through Episcopal Relief and Development.
Trip to the Common Cathedral
Our high school confirmation class will be going to Boston on January 4 to worship with the homeless on the Boston Common and provide them with lunch and other basic survival supplies. Details will come out mid-December as far as what lunch supplies which will be needed; but a bin will be in the foyer throughout the month for items like wool socks, mittens, hats, underwear – all which are always in great demand.
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Sunday School
The Sunday school program is working very smoothly with a team of two adults taking charge of the classes each month. Our little Sunday school is growing and the kids and the teachers are really enjoying themselves. One child said Sunday should be called “fun-day”! The One Room School House curriculum is being used which focuses on helping the children become familiar with the stories and lessons found in the Bible. The teacher sign up sheet is filled through December, but we need more teams for a few months in 2009. Sign up today!
Adult Confirmation/ Reception/ Inquirers Class
On Wednesday evenings at 7 PM in December, there will be a series of classes giving adults who want to know more about the Episcopal Church or are considering being received or confirmed when the Bishop visits on Jan. 18th. However, anyone, even long time members are welcome to attend! Please sign up on the sheet in the foyer.
WORSHIP
Christmas Choir Practice
Each year the choir provides special music for Christmas Eve. Many people cannot make the commitment to be with the choir year round, but could join in this festive occasion. Anyone who would like to join the choir to sing or to provide instrumental music on Christmas Eve is welcome. Practices are generally on Thursday evenings. Talk with Pam Chulada-Smith for more information.
Christmas Services
Christmas Eve is on Wednesday December 24th. Special music begins around 7:10 and the service in celebration of the Feast of the Nativity begins at 7:30. On Christmas day there will be a simple spoken Eucharist at 9 AM.
Altar Guild Retirement
The Altar Guild is sad to report that Eileen Mawson has retired. She has served St. David’s in many capacities but none as important as Altar Guild member. Eileen will be missed by all for her quiet grace and helpfulness. She was always prepared to help out with any project the Altar Guild needed. We don’t intend to let her go too far though as we will call on her expertise to help with planning for Christmas and Easter services as well as filling in when someone needs her.
We extend a super big thank you to Eileen for being such a wonderful member of our committee.
PROPERTY
Property Committee
The group continues to focus on energy savings. A presentation was made to the Vestry, and approved, regarding the results of comparison fuel costs with the recommendation we contract with Fuller Oil. They will provide 24 hr. service, and automatic delivery at a cost of $3.07 p/gal w/ a maximum of $4.00 p/gallon. As winter approaches, we are looking at our current plowing and sanding contracts (we pay separately) and comparing costs with other providers. We will also be exploring some cost saving measures in the rectory such as repairing a radiator valve and reinstalling inner doors.
Bids have been obtained to repair of the front door roof area (leaks) as well as the front of the garage.
There is a rodent and squirrel problem in the attic and in the rectory, which is being addressed through a professional company. As part of the contract, they will be patching any openings they find, flagging any areas where animals have been near the wiring and, will be monitoring regularly all activity.
Fall Work Party
Each fall we have a fall work party. It is scheduled for Sunday, November 23 following the 10 a.m. service. People are needed to help with both outside yard work and inside cleaning. If you can help even for an hour or two after church, a lot can be accomplished and it really becomes a social time as well. We will also be ordering pizza for lunch. So, join us if you are able. Wear your old clothes to church; bring your cleaning supplies, (i.e. Windex, paper towels, etc.) or your yard tools (i.e. gloves, rakes, trimmers, etc.) Let’s keep on working together to care for God’ house.
FUN EVENTS AND FUND RAISING
St. David’s Craft Fair 2008
Well we did it! We managed to have another successful fall “Crafter’s Fair”. At last report we raised $7695.00. No easy feat given the present state of the economy. But, as usual, you all came through. The bakers, the knitters, the food court workers, the checkers, the raffle prize gatherers, the cookie walk clerks, the security workers, the set-up and break–down workers, the grounds planner, the advertising, the bouncy, the music, the face painting, the crafters door prize group, the street sign locations and of course the Craft Fair Liaison, our own Ellie Carey. If we have left anyone out, we apologize. One thing we are sure of, everyone that was asked to assist did so wholeheartedly and we are so very thankful for their hard work and for their faithfulness to our church.
As for next year; both Joanne and Judi have agreed to co-chair the fair again and Ellie has agreed to continue as the liaison to the crafters. We will be checking with those people who have chaired committees this past year to see if they are willing to carry on for another year.
We are also in the process of printing a small business card that invites crafters with unusual products to be part of our fair. If you plan to attend a craft fair any time soon please ask for a few cards to pass out to potential clients. This card would also provide the recipient with a $10.00 discount if they book with us. Please be sure that you give these cards out only to crafters that 100 percent hand craft their own product. We never lack crafters that make jewelry and we always give past participant’s first opportunity to rebook with us.
Lets all work together again for a successful ‘8th Annual St. David’s Crafters Fair next September.

Shore Dinner
The shore dinner was again a great success with the best steamers around! What had began as a social event is becoming a significant fund raiser. This year $1400 was made. Thanks to all those who purchased, cooked, and served a wonderful meal!
Have you started using Good Search?
Good Search is a search engine that pays St. David’s one penny for each search someone does. Last year we received a check for $48.91 which isn’t bad at a penny per search. This year we have only earned $17.96 so far. It’s easy to use just go to www.goodsearch.com and tell them you want to Good Search for St. David’s in Salem NH.
While you’re there scroll down to Good Shop. If you shop on line going through Good Shop will give St. David’s even more money. They donate a percentage of each purchase and there’s all kinds of links to popular web sites like L.L. Bean, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Staples, Target, the list goes on and on. By using Good Shop you could spend your Scrip cards that have already given St. David’s a percentage of the price and then give even more on-line.
Pot Luck Supper and Yankee Swap
Last year we had such a great time that we will do it again. On Saturday evening, December 13th, at 6PM, we will have a pot luck supper in the lower hall, followed by an old fashioned “Yankee Swap”. Everyone brings a wrapped gift. It can be something nice, something funny, eatable, or one of those “what in the heck is it?” gifts. Gifts are selected one by one and each person has an opportunity to “swap” the gift they received with someone else – voluntarily or involuntarily! The event is loads of fun and laughter.
FINANCES
We only have $2000 left to receive to finish our InVesting in Vinyl campaign. Wouldn’t it be great to have met our goal of $15,000 by the end of 2008! The 2008 budget continues to be in good shape. The property committee has being doing wonderful work finding ways to save fuel and plowing costs. These were the line items understandably hit the hardest given last year’s winter weather and the spike in fuel costs.
We know these are uncertain economic times. But we ask that when you make out your pledge for 2009, do not do it on the basis of what might happen, but on the basis of your current finances and what the Holy Spirit is now leading you to give. If your economic situation changes in 2009, it only takes a call to the treasurer to inform her that you need to make a change in your pledge. And please do pledge! Now, more than ever, the vestry needs this information to develop a faithful and accurate budget for the upcoming year. Thank you so much for your faithfulness!
PASTORAL VISITS
Rector home visits
In addition to visits to the homebound and meeting with those in times of crisis, Carolyn is seeking to continue to make simple home visits that provide parishioners an opportunity to opportunity to ask questions, share any concerns, and offer feedback and suggestions about the life and ministry of the parish. A number of people have called and visits have been made. Visits enable the rector to meet you in your own space, get a sense of what kinds of things nurture you spiritually and how the parish can support you in that. Visits encourage open communication and builds community. So Carolyn will be making some calls. But if you want to make it easier – feel free to call her first!
Hospital Visits
Remember to call your priest when you find yourself hospitalized or going in for surgery. Carolyn would be glad to pray with you, do an anointing with oil for healing, or bring you communion.
THANK YOU!
Thanks to Deb Ogin, Diana Seifert, Betty Moekel, Elsie Jackson, and Eileen Mawson for their administrative help. Thanks to the Sunday School and confirmation teachers; and the committees overseeing the Craft Fair, Outreach, Property, Finance, Worship, Stewardship, Evangelism, and the Vestry which tries to keep the rector in line. And thanks to all of you for your prayers and financial support. In other words, we are deeply grateful to all of you who give your time, resources, and talents to enable the life and ministry of St. David’s to continue!!!
