From the Rector

Greetings everyone!

As I was looking at all the activities of St. David’s during September and October, I felt so blessed to be a part of the life and ministry of this parish.  We had three baptisms and have a wonderful group of youth preparing for confirmation.  Almost every member of the parish contributed in some way to make our annual craft fair a huge success.  We had fun and fellowship together at the Shore Dinner.  On St. Francis day, all kinds of critters came to church and were blessed.  We continue to have a vibrant outreach ministry.  The Boys and Girls Club was very grateful for the school supplies we collected for needy kids in Salem.  At least $400 was raised to support the homeless through Lazarus House and its ministries.  The presents for children whose parents are in prison are piled high around the Christmas tree.  The Dave Hall Fund is providing everything from cribs to sports equipment to tuition, so these kids in foster care who have suffered so much can be safe and have ways of developing their full potential.  And finally, the members of St. David’s have continued to faithfully support each other in times of need.

With all these wonderful blessings of our life and ministry together, I was not surprised that the stewardship committee chose as a theme for our pledge campaign this year: “Tending God’s Garden.”  We have a bountiful garden.  God has called each of us to be co-gardeners with God and to joyfully acknowledge and share the fruits of the harvest.  So to help us fulfill our call, each week during the campaign we have been focusing on a different aspect of tending the spiritual gardens of our souls, our parish, and the great garden of the earth and all that dwells therein.  We’ve talked about looking closely at our soil – who we are and our social location.  We reflected on the purpose of our garden and selecting the right seeds we desire to nurture at this time.  In the next few weeks we will discuss the spiritual essentials of watering, pruning, and weeding.  Then, on November 19th, we will be celebrating the fruit God has blessed us with as we gather in our financial pledges for 2009.  In the next few weeks, please take the time to really pray about what God would have you give to enable God’s garden here at St. David’s to continue, grow, and share its gifts with all in need.

God’s Peace and Blessings!

Carolyn

OUTREACH

School Supplies for kids in Salem

Thanks to all the members of the parish who brought in school supplies to children who could not afford them.  The supplies were given to the Salem Boys and Girls Club for distribution.  The Club was grateful for our help.  Supplies were also given out to at least three mothers who came to the church asking for assistance in obtaining what their children needed for school.

Hike for Hope

The final amount is still being tabulated, but members of St. David’s donated at almost $500 to support the ministries of Lazarus House which provides Lawrence and Salem area residents with emergency shelter, transitional housing, dental services, food, and clothing.

CHIPS (children of incarcerated parents)

Presents are piled high around the Christmas tree in the sanctuary to be given to children whose parents are in prison.  This is a 31 year old program run by the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire.  For some of these children, who are already coping with an absent parent, this will be the only gift they receive.  Once again, you have all responded so generously!

The Dave Hall Memorial Outreach Fund

Word is out about the fund and requests are pouring in from the two primary case workers assisting foster children in the greater Salem area.  In September, the Outreach Committee received a request for two cribs for foster children in Haverhill.  A daughter of one of our members donated two virtually new cribs and the Dave Hall Fund was used to purchase two mattress and sheets.  The committee also received and approved two requests - one to enable a young woman who spent almost all of her life in foster care to attend school to obtain her certification to be a licensed nursing assistant.  She and DSS had come up with several other funding sources, but needed the remaining $600 for tuition.  The committee also approved purchasing athletic equipment for a 15 year old so that he might be able to participate in school sports.  Other requests which have just come in for review are: $100 for a year long museum pass to provide a place and activity for supervised parental visits;  possibly adopting a family or purchasing Christmas gifts for a child in foster care; two twin beds; a bicycle, and a guitar and lessons.  Early in November members also provided some “hands on work” assisting a foster family with their fall yard clean up.

Nets for Life

In our budget for 2008 which was approved at last year’s annual meeting in January, St. David’s made a budgetary commitment to support projects addressing the needs laid out in the Millennium Goals.  These goals address all kinds of issues with the hope of alleviating the suffering of extreme poverty in the world.  Last year the parish provided funding for an irrigation system for an isolated village in Mexico and assembled “school kits” for children living in impoverished areas or in refugee camps.  This year the congregation decided to take up a collection for St. Joseph’s School for Indian Children which provides housing, education, and medical care for poor children living in 3 reservations in N. Dakota.  We also approved collecting money for mosquito nets which help children in Africa from malaria and other mosquito borne diseases.  Donations for these nets will be our outreach focus during December. Each net costs $12 and will be distributed through Episcopal Relief and Development.

Trip to the Common Cathedral

Our high school confirmation class will be going to Boston on January 4 to worship with the homeless on the Boston Common and provide them with lunch and other basic survival supplies.  Details will come out mid-December as far as what lunch supplies which will be needed; but a bin will be in the foyer throughout the month for items like wool socks, mittens, hats, underwear – all which are always in great demand.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Sunday School

The Sunday school program is working very smoothly with a team of two adults taking charge of the classes each month.  Our little Sunday school is growing and the kids and the teachers are really enjoying themselves.  One child said Sunday should be called “fun-day”!  The One Room School House curriculum is being used which focuses on helping the children become familiar with the stories and lessons found in the Bible.  The teacher sign up sheet is filled through December, but we need more teams for a few months in 2009.  Sign up today!

Adult Confirmation/ Reception/ Inquirers Class

On Wednesday evenings at 7 PM in December, there will be a series of classes giving adults who want to know more about the Episcopal Church or are considering being received or confirmed when the Bishop visits on Jan. 18th.  However, anyone, even long time members are welcome to attend!  Please sign up on the sheet in the foyer.

WORSHIP

Christmas Choir Practice

Each year the choir provides special music for Christmas Eve.  Many people cannot make the commitment to be with the choir year round, but could join in this festive occasion.  Anyone who would like to join the choir to sing or to provide instrumental music on Christmas Eve is welcome.  Practices are generally on Thursday evenings.  Talk with Pam Chulada-Smith for more information.

Christmas Services

Christmas Eve is on Wednesday December 24th.  Special music begins around 7:10 and the service in celebration of the Feast of the Nativity begins at 7:30.  On Christmas day there will be a simple spoken Eucharist at 9 AM.

Altar Guild Retirement

The Altar Guild is sad to report that Eileen Mawson has retired.  She has served St. David’s in many capacities but none as important as Altar Guild member.  Eileen will be missed by all for her quiet grace and helpfulness.  She was always prepared to help out with any project the Altar Guild needed. We don’t intend to let her go too far though as we will call on her expertise to help with planning for Christmas and Easter services as well as filling in when someone needs her.

We extend a super big thank you to Eileen for being such a wonderful member of our committee.

PROPERTY

Property Committee
The group continues to focus on energy savings.  A presentation was made to the Vestry, and approved, regarding the results of comparison fuel costs with the recommendation we contract with Fuller Oil. They will provide 24 hr. service, and automatic delivery at a cost of $3.07 p/gal w/ a maximum of $4.00 p/gallon.  As winter approaches, we are looking at our current plowing and sanding contracts (we pay separately) and comparing costs with other providers. We will also be exploring some cost saving measures in the rectory such as repairing a radiator valve and reinstalling inner doors.
Bids have been obtained to repair of the front door roof area (leaks) as well as the front of the garage.
There is a rodent and squirrel problem in the attic and in the rectory, which is being addressed through a professional company.  As part of the contract, they will be patching any openings they find, flagging any areas where animals have been near the wiring and, will be monitoring regularly all activity.

Fall Work Party

Each fall we have a fall work party.  It is scheduled for Sunday, November 23 following the 10 a.m. service.  People are needed to help with both outside yard work and inside cleaning.  If you can help even for an hour or two after church, a lot can be accomplished and it really becomes a social time as well.  We will also be ordering pizza for lunch.  So, join us if you are able.   Wear your old clothes to church; bring your cleaning supplies, (i.e. Windex, paper towels, etc.) or your yard tools (i.e. gloves, rakes, trimmers, etc.) Let’s keep on working together to care for God’ house.

FUN EVENTS AND FUND RAISING

St. David’s Craft Fair 2008

Well we did it!  We managed to have another successful fall “Crafter’s Fair”.  At last report we raised $7695.00. No easy feat given the present state of the economy. But, as usual, you all came through. The bakers, the knitters,  the food court workers, the checkers, the raffle prize  gatherers, the cookie walk clerks, the security workers, the set-up and break–down workers, the grounds planner, the advertising, the bouncy, the music, the face painting, the crafters door prize group, the street sign locations and of course the Craft Fair Liaison, our own Ellie Carey. If we have left anyone out, we apologize. One thing we are sure of, everyone that was asked to assist did so wholeheartedly and we are so very thankful for their hard work and for their faithfulness to our church.

As for next year; both Joanne and Judi have agreed to co-chair the fair again and Ellie has agreed to continue as the liaison to the crafters. We will be checking with those people who have chaired committees this past year to see if they are willing to carry on for another year.

We are also in the process of printing a small business card that invites crafters with unusual products to be part of our fair. If you plan to attend a craft fair any time soon please ask for a few cards to pass out to potential clients. This card would also provide the recipient with a $10.00 discount if they book with us. Please be sure that you give these cards out only to crafters that 100 percent hand craft their own product. We never lack crafters that make jewelry and we always give past participant’s first opportunity to rebook with us.

Lets all work together again for a successful ‘8th Annual St. David’s Crafters Fair next September.

                                    Joanne Theriault & Judi Habeeb

Shore Dinner

The shore dinner was again a great success with the best steamers around!  What had began as a social event is becoming a significant fund raiser.  This year $1400 was made.  Thanks to all those who purchased, cooked, and served a wonderful meal!

Have you started using Good Search?

Good Search is a search engine that pays St. David’s one penny for each search someone does.  Last year we received a check for $48.91 which isn’t bad at a penny per search.  This year we have only earned $17.96 so far.  It’s easy to use just go to www.goodsearch.com and tell them you want to Good Search for St. David’s in Salem NH.

While you’re there scroll down to Good Shop.  If you shop on line going through Good Shop will give St. David’s even more money.  They donate a percentage of each purchase and there’s all kinds of links to popular web sites like L.L. Bean, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Staples, Target, the list goes on and on.  By using Good Shop you could spend your Scrip cards that have already given St. David’s a percentage of the price and then give even more on-line.

Pot Luck Supper and Yankee Swap

Last year we had such a great time that we will do it again.  On Saturday evening, December 13th, at 6PM, we will have a pot luck supper in the lower hall, followed by an old fashioned “Yankee Swap”.  Everyone brings a wrapped gift.  It can be something nice, something funny, eatable, or one of those “what in the heck is it?” gifts.  Gifts are selected one by one and each person has an opportunity to “swap” the gift they received with someone else – voluntarily or involuntarily!  The event is loads of fun and laughter.

FINANCES

We only have $2000 left to receive to finish our InVesting in Vinyl campaign.  Wouldn’t it be great to have met our goal of $15,000 by the end of 2008!  The 2008 budget continues to be in good shape.  The property committee has being doing wonderful work finding ways to save fuel and plowing costs. These were the line items understandably hit the hardest given last year’s winter weather and the spike in fuel costs.

We know these are uncertain economic times.  But we ask that when you make out your pledge for 2009, do not do it on the basis of what might happen, but on the basis of your current finances and what the Holy Spirit is now leading you to give.  If your economic situation changes in 2009, it only takes a call to the treasurer to inform her that you need to make a change in your pledge.  And please do pledge!  Now, more than ever, the vestry needs this information to develop a faithful and accurate budget for the upcoming year.  Thank you so much for your faithfulness!

PASTORAL VISITS

Rector home visits

In addition to visits to the homebound and meeting with those in times of crisis, Carolyn is seeking to continue to make simple home visits that provide parishioners an opportunity to opportunity to ask questions, share any concerns, and offer feedback and suggestions about the life and ministry of the parish.  A number of people have called and visits have been made.  Visits enable the rector to meet you in your own space, get a sense of what kinds of things nurture you spiritually and how the parish can support you in that. Visits encourage open communication and builds community.  So Carolyn will be making some calls.  But if you want to make it easier – feel free to call her first!

Hospital Visits

Remember to call your priest when you find yourself hospitalized or going in for surgery.  Carolyn would be glad to pray with you, do an anointing with oil for healing, or bring you communion.

THANK YOU!

Thanks to Deb Ogin, Diana Seifert, Betty Moekel, Elsie Jackson, and Eileen Mawson for their administrative help.  Thanks to the Sunday School and confirmation teachers; and the committees overseeing the Craft Fair, Outreach, Property, Finance, Worship, Stewardship, Evangelism, and the Vestry which tries to keep the rector in line.  And thanks to all of you for your prayers and financial support.  In other words, we are deeply grateful to all of you who give your time, resources, and talents to enable the life and ministry of St. David’s to continue!!!

FROM THE RECTOR

Greetings everyone!

I hope you all had some time for renewal and play this summer.  Cyndi and I had a wonderful vacation as usual on Deer Isle in Maine.  Yes, there were many days that were overcast, rainy, or had fog – but we were able to get out and do some kayaking among the many islands in the Stonington archipelago.  Some of those quiet fog ridden days were a blessing, because when the water and winds are still, it is then when one is most likely to hear the call of osprey, the barking of a seal, or the tiny whoosh of air that the porpoises make when they come to the surface.  There was a short time one afternoon when I simply stopped paddling and simply floated down one of the channels and listened to all the sounds.  I don’t find it easy to turn off the endless thoughts going through by brain and simply be fully present.  But it happened that afternoon, and I felt so close to God at that moment.

But I’m back, and the fall season is already moving into full gear!  Our Sunday School and confirmation classes for both youth and adults are getting organized; the stewardship committee is developing this year’s pledge campaign on the theme of “Tending God’s Garden” which I think you will all find inspiring.  The property committee is discussing possible ways to renovate the small coffee room so that it will not only be less of a kitchen-like meeting space, but will also be an area where parents with infants have a safe space for the kids to play in while enabling the parents to still feel a part of the service.  And the Craft Fair preparations are going full speed ahead for the big event on September 20th and 21st.  This one of St. David’s two “all hands on deck” fund raisers which are so critical in enabling the ongoing life and ministry of the parish.  There are a zillion ways you can help, so jump in whatever and however ways you can.  For those of you who are new members of the craft fair this year, you will also find it to be a wonderful time of fellowship and fun!

Speaking of fellowship and fun, the famous Shore Dinner will be coming the first Saturday in October and if you come to church on October 5th, you will likely find yourself sitting beside dogs, cats, and guinea pigs, as we celebrate the feast of St. Francis with the blessing of animals.

What a great parish!  God’s peace and blessings!

Carolyn

OUTREACH

Millennium Development Goal projects:

St. David’s collected $437 in July for the St. Joseph’s Indian School enabling low income Native American children living in South Dakota to attend a residential school that also helps provide food and health care to their families.  A second project that the parish expressed an interest in is Nets for Life which enables Episcopal Relief and Development to provide mosquito netting and malaria prevention and treatment for poverty stricken areas in Africa.  We will take up a collection for that project in December.

The Dave Hall Memorial Outreach Fund

The family in Salem which needed $1263 to make the required renovations to their home in order to take in a foster child, has had the work completed.  Danny’s case worker has reported that he has moved into his home, and he and his new family are deeply grateful that St. David’s helped make this possible. The committee also received a request to send a child to day camp for the summer.  Partial funding for the request was approved, but the family was able to find other resources.  The Outreach Committee is hoping to meet with the Foster Family case worker again to evaluate what has been done so far and to get a sense of upcoming needs.

Support for the Homeless:  Hike for Hope and a trip to the “Common Cathedral”

Two of our members, Denise Labreque and Miki LaBlanc work for Lazarus House in Lawrence. Lazarus House and its ministries provides for Lawrence and Salem residents emergency shelter and transitional housing for the homeless, a food pantry, thrift shop, dental services, a meal program, and other outreach support.  It is an amazing and highly respected program worthy of our support.  Each year, Lazarus House has their major fundraiser entitled Hike for Hope.  This year the Hike for Hope will be held on October 5th.  Miki and Denise will be looking for sponsors as they walk, and also invite any and all other walkers to join them.

St. David’s confirmation class will also be engaging in a project to support the homeless on Sunday Nov. 2nd.  They will be traveling down to Boston to worship with the homeless on the Boston Common at the “Common Cathedral”.  Afterwards they will be providing lunch.  The class will be collecting supplies to bring with them such as clean socks, underwear, hats and gloves, sleeping bags, etc.  As we get closer to the date, we will provide a more detailed list.

Food Pantry Needs

Thank you all for faithfully filling the baskets at the back of the sanctuary with food and other household supplies each week.  Generally, the items there are given to the pantry run out of Triumphant Cross Lutheran Church.  However, this summer, you all responded to a cry for help from Haverhill.  This October the parishes of Southern Convocation will be doing a joint collection again to support the food pantry at St. Andrew’s in Manchester.  There are just so many needs out there at this time including New Hampshire’s state food collection site that supplies the pantry and is in need of donations.  Just keep bringing a little in every time you shop.  Thanks!

CHIPS

In October, St. David’s will be participating in the 31st diocesan collection of Christmas toys to give to the children of incarcerated parents.  These children are the innocent victims of crime.  This program eases the pain of both the child and parent, and provides an opportunity to maintain their bond and share a time of joy together.  The goal of the Prison Concerns Committee for this year is 1200 gifts and an equal number of books.  There will be a Christmas tree in the back of our sanctuary with ornaments with suggested items.  Take as many ornaments as you want, purchase the gifts and/or books, and put them unwrapped and unopened under the tree.  These will be brought to Diocesan Convention on November 8.  You can also help by sorting and wrapping the gifts.  More information is posted in the foyer.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Sunday school will be starting on September 7th during the 10 AM service.  Each month, a team of two adults will be conducting the class which will involve stories, crafts, and other projects.  The curriculum this year is “The One Room Sunday School” which provides material for all ages and focuses on helping children become familiar with the Bible.  Susan Violi and Ellie Goulkin will be teaching in September, and Irene Curtin and Marlene Pelkey will be teaching in October.  Each month, the children will worship with their families on Sunday.  The September classes will be held on the 7, 14, and 18th; and the October classes will be held on the 12th, 19th, and 26th.

Adult education

The Adult Forums will continue each month with the series “Cruising through the Bible”.  A book or a number of books from scripture will be discussed, giving those who attend an overview of the theme and material contained in each book.  This series will help people become familiar with the contents of our holy scriptures.  The next adult forums are scheduled for Sunday the 28th and October 26.

Youth Confirmation Class

After the 10 AM service and coffee hour on September 7, there will be an orientation meeting for parents and any youth exploring whether they would like to be confirmed when the bishop visits St. David’s in January.  Sherry Kellet and Carolyn Stevenson will be teaching the class which tentatively will be meeting on Sunday afternoons at 4PM.  The class will be a combination of discussions on various topics about the Christian life and faith, field trips and service projects, and opportunities to reflect with a sponsor and other adults in the parish about their faith.

Adult Inquirers Group

During September, there will be a sign up sheet for any adults who would like to learn more about the Episcopal Church who also may be exploring the possibility of conformation or reception into the Episcopal Church in January.  Sign up if you are interested and we will then determine the most convenient time for people to meet.

WORSHIP

There will be only one service of worship on September 21 at 8 AM due to the craft fair. Ten o’clockers make note!

The Blessing of Animals in celebration of St. Francis will be held shortly after the 10 AM service on October 5th.  Rover, Fluffy, and Piglet are encouraged to come to worship at that service and bring their owners.  Everyone in the community is also welcome to come for the service or simply the blessing.  So invite all your neighbors, friends, and their pets!

PROPERTY

The Property Committee has been engaged in both immediate projects and long term planning.  The painting of the garage was completed; the garage was cleaned out, the parking lot light repaired, and the trim of the deck roof painted.  Various contractors’ prices are being obtained to make sure the parish is getting the most for its money for fuel oil, snow plowing, and repair to the roof over the front entrance.

One long range plan for building improvement that is being explored is renovating the small coffee room, making it more spacious, energy efficient, and less “kitchen like” area for meetings; and a suitable space for small children to play during worship while enabling their parents to feel a part of the service.  The dark woodwork would be made brighter, the kitchen cupboards would be replaced with a small sink and cabinet, folding glass doors would replace the current accordion partition, and a speaker system installed.

Building use policies are being reviewed and updated for groups.  The Property Committee also would like to remind everyone to be aware and respectful of the privacy and anonymity of groups who are meeting in the church and to arrange their time and means of entrance accordingly.

Our friend “Frank” from AA has done some more wonderful property work.  He not only cut all the brush again from the slope facing the intersection, but he chopped out all of the tree stumps with an ax.  It looks fabulous.  Thank your Frank!!

FUN EVENTS AND FUND RAISING

Craft Fair

As you read this the Crafters Fair is less then 3 weeks away. There is still much to do to prepare for a successful event. Presently we have 21 crafters and we will be busy finalizing a grounds plan with Doug Moore. We still have signs to finish with the up-dated dates of the fair and the placements of them throughout town. If you have already taken a sign to place on your own property, please do not put it out until we have notified the town of our intent to place them as this may cause us poor relations with the town. Also if you are placing a sign please be sure to note it on the sign placement sheet in the upper hall. We need to know where every sign goes. Carolyn will announce in church when it is ok to put them out. We are only allowed to have them out for about 2 weeks before the fair. There will be flyers available for you to place in stores and other public buildings to advertise the fair. Please consider taking at least 2 and post them as you go about your affairs. You will be surprised at how many places that you frequent that would be glad to display a flyer. There are many things that you can do to ensure that our fair is successful.

  • Consider signing up for the set up or breaking down of the booths.
  • Sell those raffle tickets that you received
  • Volunteer to bake lots of cookies (needed both Saturday & Sunday)
  • Volunteer to make a basket for the raffle table or donate a prize
  •  Sign up to help make fudge ( date to be announced if needed)
  • Place a sign somewhere in town
  • Place a flyer advertising the fair.
  • Sign up to help out at the fair (even an hour would be greatly appreciated)
  • Offer the use of your easy-up or awning if you have one
  • Tell all your acquaintances what a great fair we have and ask them to stop by
  • Support your fair by attending

The next craft fair meeting will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2008 between the two Sunday services. We will use this time to wrap up any concerns that you may have and to address unfinished business. Please plan to attend and support this important event.

Joanne Theriault & Judi Habeeb, Co- chairpersons

SCRIP

The SCRIP program is continuing to bring in some extra income for the parish.  The gift cards with which to make your everyday as well as your special purchases are being sold by Sherry Kellett the first Sunday of the month.  The purchase of cards can not also be done on line.  Carolyn usually has some Dunkin Donut cards available in the office.

Shore Dinner

The annual St. David’s “Shore Dinner” will be held this year on Saturday evening, Oct. 4.  It is always a time for good food and good fellowship.  The menu will be the usual delicious salad, steamers, lobster, steak and homemade apple pie.  A registration form is attached to the newsletter and available at the church.  Please have your reservations in no later than Sept. 28!

CHURCH ADMINISTRATION

Mid-year Treasurer’s report

Thank you so much for keeping up your pledges over the summer!  Loose offerings have also being doing well this year.  Believe it or not, after only one year, we are only $2,180 short of the $15,000 diocesan loan that was taken out to pay for the vinyl siding and rectory windows.  Let’s finish it off!

Visits enable the rector to meet you in your own space, get a sense of what kinds of things nurture you spiritually and how the parish can support you in that. Hospital Visits

Remember to call your priest when you find yourself hospitalized or going in for surgery.  Carolyn would be glad to pray with you, do an anointing with oil for healing, or bring you communion.  Other lay ministers are also available to bring communion to someone who is hospitalized or home-bound.

THANK YOU!

Thanks to Diana Seifert for creating the Sunday bulletins, to Betty Moekel for folding them and for she and Elsie Jackson for assembling the newsletters, to Betty Moekel, Eileen Mawson and Elsie Jackson for counting the offerings each week, for Peter Kirk for printing out the cover letters inviting new area residents to St. David’s, to Susan Violi for weeding the gardens, and Phil Smith, Bob & Judy Habeeb, and Barbara Klenner for painting the garage and all those who helped clean it out.  Thanks to all those who help out with Sunday worship in so many different ways.  Thanks to all of you who give your time, resources, and talents to enable the life and ministry of St. David’s to continue!!!

Scrip program

Filed under: Announcements — Stacey @ 11:47 am

St. David’s is now using the scrip program as a fund raiser.  Purchase gift cards from a wide variety of stores and restaurants to do you every day shopping.  A percentage of the purchase of your card will automatically go to the parish.  Order forms are available at the church and Sherry Kellett will be taking orders for cards the first Sunday of each month.  Plan ahead and support St. David’s without costing you an additional dime!

Messenger for September ~ October
2007

I hope all of you had a blessed summer and were able to take some time for fun and relaxation. Cyndi and I enjoyed our vacation rental cottage in Maine for two weeks in August. Cyndi was able to get some needed rest and I managed to get out in my kayak to paddle around the islands virtually every day. The seals were elusive this year, but four times porpoises swam near my boat – cool!

The summer didn’t prove to be too quiet around the parish as the construction crews banged away installing brand new vinyl siding around the entire church including the cupola, and replaced the old single pane glass windows in the small coffee room and the rectory! Those of you who were able to attend the pot luck supper on August 25 heard a rundown of the sequence of events that led the property committee and vestry to make this decision. But in case you missed it - one of the items identified by the property committee this winter was to address was the faded and peeling paint on the church and the single pane glass windows in the rectory. The estimates obtained to do the painting job ran around $7000. Vinyl siding estimates ran everywhere from 15 to well into the 20 thousand dollar range. Windows would have easily also run into 10 or more thousand dollars. We thought the jobs would be put on the “maybe someday” list. But the man with the million connections, Bob Habeeb, found someone he knew who did reputable work who would put new quality siding on the church for $10,000. Knowing that he also installs windows, we asked for an estimate for the 18 windows which he said he would do for $4,440. It was obviously an incredible deal, but had to be done this summer. So the vestry moved forward in faith to approve it.

With the cupola and some additional needed work, the total cost of the project turned out to be $15,542. The vestry decided to apply to the diocese for a loan for $15,000 so that our capital improvement funds would not be totally wiped out, giving us no “cushion” for sudden unexpected needed repairs. It also would give us the incentive to keep working to raise the money to pay off the loan. The diocese has not yet given us a decision regarding the loan. In any case, it is critical that the parish raise the money to pay for the siding and the windows so as not to be hampered by debt or not have the funds to address needs that arise.

On Saturday, August 25, the parish had a fun pot-luck supper to kick off our capital campaign. Using the clues provided in the church bulletins in August, Lana correctly guessed the name of the campaign: InVesting in Vinyl. It is a crazy title, but it expresses not only the fact that the siding and windows are going to provide a huge savings in energy and maintenance costs to the parish in the coming years, but also with a humorous twist, reflects the idea of church building itself putting on a new beautiful liturgical garment. (The priest and LEM’s wear “vestments” on Sunday mornings. Hey, we were trying to be creative!).

The parish looks fabulous! I can’t believe that in the course of two years, not only has St. David’s had a total interior makeover, but now has had a total exterior makeover. And a new outdoor handicap elevator is yet to be installed! What a witness to the community of to the life, vitality, and ministry of St. David’s! And people are noticing all that you have done. Let’s keep going! If you didn’t get a pledge sheet, one is attached to this newsletter. Give what you can and God’s blessings be upon you whatever that amount may be.

Your servant in Christ,
Carolyn

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Adult Forums

The Adult forum on the History of the Holy Eucharist that was scheduled for August was postponed to September 23 so more people could attend. A speaker from Church World Service will come to do a forum on their ministry either in October or in November.

YOUTH ACTIVITES

St. David’s Youth Paint Trailers at Cook’s Trailer Park

On August 22, Molly Alger, Wayne Clarke, and Carolyn Stevenson participated in a Christian community service project organized by a group that calls itself Adorn. Adorn is an ecumenical ministry that seeks to express the love of Jesus by meeting the needs of the residents of Salem. The owners and a number of low income and elderly people who live in Cook’s Trailer Park were delighted to volunteers come in to spruce up and repair some of the old trailers and ones damaged by the spring floods. Volunteers from approximately 12 different churches and organizations participated over the course of a week. Wayne and Molly represented St. David’s. Armed with paint brushes, scrapers, paint, and ladders, they spent 8 working on several trailers, making them look like new.

Spiritual Development
& Worship

There will be a service of Holy Baptism on September 2 for Gabriella Harris, the daughter of Maurice Harris and Kristina Silva (Anita Hill’s niece). During that celebration, their other daughter, Kalina, will be receiving new godparents. Congratulations to the family!

On September 9, David John’s daughter, Felicity, will be wedded to Joe Liebke. Carolyn will conduct the service at the Alvirne Memorial Chapel in Hudson.

Only one service on Sept. 16
Make a note on your calendar that there will only be one service of Holy Eucharist on Sunday, September 16th due to the craft fair. The service will be at 8 AM.

Quiet time in the sanctuary
We live in a very busy and noisy world where, for some, the church is one of the few place conducive to quiet reflection. To help maintain an atmosphere where people can pray and prepare for worship, we will be closing the doors to the sanctuary 10 minutes prior the 10AM service to cut down the noise from the hall.

+ CHURCH OFFICE HOURS are Tuesday & Thursday mornings from 9am – 12pm. +

OUTREACH

September Outreach Project: Southern Convocation
A number of months ago at a meeting of the clergy of the Southern Convocation, we were discussing the decision made last March at the international Anglican Communion’s meeting of “Primates” (we call ours a “Presiding Bishop”). At that meeting, the Primates decided to ask the Bishops of the Episcopal Church to make a commitment not to consent any further consecrations of gay/lesbian bishops who are in relationships, nor support any blessing of same-sex relationships in their dioceses, and (they really weren’t given a choice on this one) to have an international group decide how to deal with dioceses in the USA who do not want to be under the oversight of our elected Presiding Bishop. They then set the date of September 30 for a formal response by our House of Bishops.

Our bishops will be meeting in September to discuss and formulate a response. But in the meantime, the clergy of Southern Convocation thought it would be a great symbol of the commitment we all share at the parish level to keep our focus on the gospel of Jesus Christ by having us all engage in a joint act of ministry on that day. The idea is to have all of the parishes collect food for the poor that entire month. Then, in a giant caravan, cars from each parish in our convocation will deliver our collective offering to the food pantry at St. Andrew’s Church in West Manchester.

How about we at St. David’s collecting enough food to fill up two cars! We will collect the food throughout the month and pack up the cars promptly after the 10:00 service to arrive around noon at St. Andrew’s in Manchester. If you want your car to be filled or just to come along for a great time, talk to Carolyn.

St. Andrew’s suggested food supplies: canned fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, or soup; cold cereal; bake mixes, quick boxed meals; diapers; toiletries; pasta or rice; coffee, sugar, laundry & dishwashing soap.

Outreach for October: Prison Outreach Gifts for Children
Every year all the parishes of the Diocese of New Hampshire take up a collection of Christmas gifts for the children of incarcerated parents. The gifts are collected during the month of October, and will be brought to Diocesan Convention in November. The box in the foyer will now be used to collect the gifts. The gifts must be new, unwrapped, and in their original packages. We will make available items that will not be appropriate to be brought into the prisons. Please remember the older children also when you purchase your gifts.

Fundraising Walk for Lazarus House’s Transitional Housing Program
On Sunday September 30 at 1:00 PM at Merrimack College in North Andover, there will be the annual 5 mile Hike for Hope Pledge Walk. This walk will be raising funds for The Lazarus House Transitional Housing Program, which will be a critical bridge between a shelter and permanent housing. Although Lazarus House is in Lawrence, that is where the homeless of Salem go for emergency shelter. There is a brochure about the walk in the foyer and Denise Labrecque is an employee there and would be happy to answer any questions you may have. You can also receive information at www.HikeforHope.org. Please consider walking or sponsoring someone who will.

Foster Children and Families
At the parish outreach meeting in May, the congregation expressed an interest in exploring the possibility of St. David’s committing itself to a year round local ministry supporting foster children and their families. On August 19th, Kathleen Talbot from the Foster Care Division of the Dept. of Human Health and Services spoke to members of the parish after the 8 AM service. She informed us that there is an average of 75 children in foster care in approximately 50 homes in the greater Salem area. The families receive only $13 a day per child for food, recreational expenses, clothes, etc. (with a little
extra bonus at the start of the school year and at Christmas). She talked about many possible ways St. David’s could help these children whose lives so often have been characterized by instability and abuse. Both the people who attended that meeting and the vestry felt that this may be an exciting and meaningful ministry for our parish. The vestry asked that the outreach committee reconvene this fall for the purpose of developing a clear and concrete proposal of what this ministry would involve should we decided as a parish to “try it on”. This proposal will be presented for discussion at our annual meeting in Jan. 2008. If you are interested in being involved in the outreach committee for this purpose, let Carolyn know.

Millennium Development Goals
Thanks to everyone who so generously donated money for our two Millennium Goal projects: irrigation supplies for the village of Colonia Benito Juarez in Mexico and “Tools and Blankets” through the Church World Service. Between your donations and the money raised from the Motorcycle Blessing and the Youth Band Night, $944 was raised - $244 more than the vestry’s goal of $700! The bulk of the money will be given to Lee Alphen to purchase the supplies needed for Mexico. The remaining funds will be used to mail the kits the Church World Service headquarters and to give them the money they need to enable CWS to ship them to communities in need. We are currently planning to set up a speaker from Church World Service to talk to us about their ministry in October. At that time we will decide what kind of kits we would like to assemble, and do that as a parish activity on Sunday, December 9.

Race Track Dinner
Thanks to everyone who helped out with the race track dinner on July 10th! We had an abundance of food and help. Over 50 people were fed that evening. Lee Alphen sent us a thank you note, which is posted in the upper hall.

Thank You

Thanks to everyone who donated school supplies to children in Salem to start off their school year well equipped! The box in the foyer completely overflowed with needed items. The supplies were distributed through the Boys and Girls Club of Salem.

Food Pantry

Last year 753 pounds of food was donated to the pantry at Triumphant Cross! The secretary there said paper supplies such as toilet paper is always needed, and that they go through so many boxes of crackers that they have had to give out the crackers by the sleeve as verses a whole box. Thank you for faithfully remembering those who have trouble even keeping food on their tables.

Prayer for guidance

Last February at the annual vestry retreat, the vestry felt that St. David’s is being called to especially focus its outreach ministries on meeting the needs of children and youth. Already a number of our annual outreach efforts do reach out to young people (Christmas gifts for children of incarcerated parents, Faith and Light, scholarships for summer camp, and school supplies). But we are seeking God’s guidance as how and where to further develop this outreach focus. . We have been praying each Sunday joining together in prayer for discernment. Let us continue to pray this prayer during the week as we open our hearts and minds to God’s will:

Let us all join together in asking God’s guidance for our mission: Good and gracious God, as
your Son Jesus Christ reached out in love to welcome and serve children and all those in need, you have given St. David’s a call to do the same. We ask you for your guidance as to how you would have us live out this call. Open our hearts to discern the movements of your Holy Spirit, the needs of this community, and the gifts you have given us for service. Ignite our passion and our love for you and for others. In the name of the one who loves us all, Jesus, our Lord. Amen

EVANGELISM

St. Francis Day and the Blessing of Animals

We will be celebrating St. Francis Day on October 7. All animals are welcome to bring their owners to attend the service of Holy Eucharist at 10:00 AM. The Blessing of Animals will be held at NOON this year. The reason for the slightly later time is that the animals of the friends and volunteers from the Salem Animal Rescue League will be joining us. The shelter will be putting out a considerable amount of publicity about the event. So I expect that there will be a LOT of critters at St. David’s that day!

Welcoming Committee Report
The Welcoming Committee has received good news that it is likely that the Evangelism Committee of the Diocese may grant St. David’s the money to enable us to mail out a brochure inviting people to St. David’s to all new households in the greater Salem area for a year. We will be informed of their final decision in September. In the meantime, Anita Hill has been working on a laptop computer slide show to be shown at the craft fair. This will allow people stopping for lunch to observe pictures of the life and ministry of St. David’s and encourage them to pick up a brochure or ask questions. This show also might be able to be used at the senior center or other community events.

Name Tags and Picture Board
One of the areas the Welcoming Committee identified in helping newcomers to become a part of St. David’s is to make it easier to remember names and faces. Because even those of us who have been members for many years still have trouble remembering people’s names – especially if they attend a different service! So two things should soon be complete and found in the foyer. The first is updated name tags. Some of you are comfortable wearing them, others are not – but please consider doing so as a part of our commitment to help others get to know us. The second thing will be a picture board. JoAnne Theriault has been working hard to get photographs of as many members as possible. So if someone is trying to figure out who someone else is (because they are not wearing a name tag (hint), they can identify them by their picture. If you don’t see your picture hanging there, please nab JoAnne and she will be sure to get a snapshot of you to make the display as complete and current as possible.

WITH APPRECIATION!

Many people continue to give of time, energy and material resources! It is impossible to know about every such act or about every person who has helped out, since many acts are carried out very quietly and ‘behind the scenes.’ However, ALL SUCH GIFTS ARE VALUABLE TO THE ONGOING LIFE AND MINISTRIES OF ST. DAVID’S, so

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, TO ALL WHO HAVE GIVEN!

FUNDRAISING

Pot Luck Supper Kicks off Capital Campaign

The parish had a wonderful pot luck supper on Saturday August 25 to kick off a fund raising campaign to replenish the capital funds used to install new vinyl siding and windows in the small coffee room and rectory. There was lots of food and fun trying to guess the name of the campaign. Numerous guesses were made about the title, but Jeff Clark quickly picked up on the word “investing” and Lana Younker was the first correctly call out “InVesting in Vinyl” – to which everyone responded by booing at the corny name. Jeff and Lana both received token prizes tucked in between two small sheets of vinyl siding. Thanks to everyone for the great food and fun!

Annual Stewardship campaign of Finances Pledge Drive
The Stewardship Committee has been meeting to plan the annual stewardship pledge drive. It will officially begin on October 21 and conclude with the ingathering of pledges on November 18. Details about the campaign are being worked out, but it will be engaging and fun as usual with stories, speakers, little “give-aways”, and special food during coffee hour. More details will come out in a parish letter the beginning of October.

AUTUMN CRAFT FAIR 2007 TWO WEEKS AND COUNTING
If you were like me this summer you did everything you wanted to do and nothing that you should have done. Well it’s time to redeem your self and give back to society. There are only two weeks left until CRAFT FAIR 2007 and there is still a lot to be done. Ellie has done a terrific job rounding up crafters and as of this print we had 16 booked (not including St. David’s tables) and another 4 to 6 to submit applications. We are updating the dates of our existing signs, as well as acquired news ones and all should be ready for distribution this Sunday. We will have a sign up sheet available for you to tell us how many signs you are taking and where you plan to put them so that we can coordinate with Don and Anita Hill on the location of all our signs. Other help needed will be all night security and making cookies for the cookie walk table, just to name a few. There are sign up sheets on the wall in the coffee for the various type of help needed. Please feel free to sign up for as many as physically possible. Also, do not hesitate to contact someone you know who is already working on some aspect of the Fair to see if they could use any help. Thank you in advance for all your help and support and I hope to see you all at the Fair.

PROPERTY COMMITTEE
New Deck and Outdoor Handicap Elevator Coming Soon

The Property Committee has obtained bids for the installation of a handicap elevator and a new deck outside the upper hall. The elevator will be installed where the current stairs are located and a new deck and stairs will be built. Additionally, the committee decided to proceed to have a 14×16’ roof constructed over both the elevator and deck. The total cost of the project will be $2480 more than the UTO grant we received for $10,500.

From the Property Committee…….

Have you noticed the white siding on the church ? Have you walked into the building at night from the back parking lot amidst the new bright lighting ? Have you wanted to bend over and smell the flowers in the new memorial flower garden ? Are you amongst the parishioners who think the repaired front stone wall with new caps and pillars present a more favorable curbside impression for our grounds and buildings? Well, all of these recent projects were completed by local businesses and, each extended a significant discount for their work at St. David’s. If you or someone you know is in need of similar work, please consider them.

Triple T Siding replaced rotted wood before installing the vinyl siding on the church, replaced the old single pane windows in the rectory and will be building a new deck with roof (for our handicap lift). Call Tom @ 978-902-0459 or Steve @ 404-751-8066.

Morrison Landscaping & Construction cleared the small hill in front of the fence and repaired the stone wall and pillars. Call Steve @ 603-401-1162.

David Electrical Contracting provided the wiring and energy efficient light fixture for the rear parking lot and will be installing a new side parking lot light as well as doing the electrical work needed for the new chair lift. Call Dave @ 978-682-6262.

Serendipity designed and constructed the memorial garden. Call Mary Frances @ 603-264-2250.

We have been so blessed. God’s house continues to be cared for.
